Alan,

        Well, Kubuntu Dapper had zero trouble over a span of about four
hours, which tells me that there must be some config files that have
gotten a bit screwy somewhere in here. I will keep digging, when I can
find the time, but in the meantime I will be stuck with "Disconnect
eth0" ... "Connect eth0". :-(

        Thank you for the suggestion by the way. I am a bit embarrassed
I hadn't already thought of it.
