It sounds like you have more than an optical drive problem.  What
media did you use to for your puppy/dsl attempts?  Was that trying to
use the cdrom?

If you were using a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, I assume you were attaching
your laptop harddrive to your desktop.  What went wrong with that?  If
you take your harddrive out of your desktop, and only have the laptop
harddrive attached, you should be able to do an install.
