[Discuss] recommended DVR-R brands for reliability?

I have tried to reduce my risk by buying two different brands of
DVD-R. I typically buy Sony and Apple (and sometimes Fuji), and I burn
a copy to each. I also keep one copy in a jewel case, and the other in
a binder, one at home, one away. Yes, I am paranoiac.

I once found a website that included an application that could tell
you the manufacturer of a DVD-R (based on the data recorded in the
blank dvd-r) and match it to the manufacturers. Sometimes the cheapest
disks are being relabeled by more expensive companies (I wrote to this
list, some time ago, about my experience buying a spindle of Kodak
DVR-Rs in which only the top one was nicely finished, and the rest
were are good as the worse in the market--not even their edges were
trimmed).

In the photo world MAM-A is considered the best (and significantly
more expensive). Check this:

GIven their cost you probably don't want to use them for regular
backups, but they might be worth the money for those long-term
memories that are irreplaceable.

Darren Duncan twisted the bytes to say:

Darren> I am now in the position of wanting to start using DVR-R media for
Darren> all my backups, data and otherwise, but I am finding it difficult to
Darren> determine what are the best brands to use, or what are the worst
Darren> brands that I should stay away from.

Darren> Looking around for product reviews shows a wide range of opinions for
Darren> any particular brand, so it is hard to go by them.

Darren> My main criteria is that they last a long time and/or are reliable.
Darren> They should also be inexpensive.

Darren> My recorder is about 4 years old and can only handle DVD-Rs, so the
Darren> +Rs are out of the question for the present.

Darren> More specifically, what are your opinions of these brands:

 Darren> 1. Ridata

 Darren> 2. Fuji

Darren> Alternately, what are good web sites to look at that actually compare
Darren> and contrast the quality of different brands of this media.

Darren> Thank you. -- Darren Duncan
