I have been using Asterisk for several years now in various
configurations both residential and SOHO. The suggestions already given
about information are all sources I have used and appreciated in the
past. One place not given is the default configuration files that come
with asterisk. They are a rich source of information about asterisk. I
actually follow the CVS mailing list and primarily only look for changes
to the config files to see what is changing in asterisk. At least the
changes that result in a change in the functionality.

The config files can be a little overwhelming but they document all the
possibilities very well. When used in conjunction with other sources of
information, of course.

I have never tried any of the pre-built distributions as I prefer to use
one standardized distribution that I know (Mandriva for me) but
Asterisk-At-Home (now called trixbox, I think) has always been on my
list to play with when I got time.

Cheers
