The Linux kernel is usually bundled in a package with other related binaries, ranging from a minimal root binary install to a complete system with XFree86 and a full suite of applications. These packages are known as "distributions". For more detailed information about the various Linux distributions, see the Linux Distribution HOWTO.

(For a look at Linux hardware requirements, see the Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO.)

The Installation instructions referenced below should include a listing of what files you need from the FTP sites to install Linux. For more detailed information, see The VLUG Documents Page

You can also see the Linux Installation HOWTO for further help with obtaining and installing Linux.

If you're in the Victoria area and would like some help installing Linux, be sure to check out the VLUG InstallFest page.

Local Commercial Linux Distribution and Software Vendors

While the companies and organizations listed above provide a full distribution of Linux available for a free download, many users find it more convenient to simply purchase Linux on CD-ROM. If this sounds preferable to you, you can contact one of these local vendors below. Below are links for the Commercial versions of Linux Distributions and software (ie: You are paying a larger amount of money for support, value added software in the package, and or printed manuals.)

NOTE: not all local vendors carry cds for other platforms besides Intel.
